| Electric motorized bicycles can be power-on-demand, where the motor is activated by a handlebar mounted throttle, and/or a pedelec (from pedal electric), also known as electric assist, where the electric motor is regulated by pedaling. They are mainly used in the city.

| Dutch bikes
Dutch bicycles in the Netherlands mostly called omafiets; (grandmother's bike) are the most popular form of bicycle used in the Netherlands.
In their most classical form, they come with a step-through frame (or "loop frame", "lady's frame", although they also exist with a "diamond" or "gents's frame") that is suitable for both sexes. Their wheels are quite large (28 inch – 635 mm), they are painted black with a white-blazoned rear mudguard (fender), and have a coaster brake, also known as a back pedal brake or rod-actuated rim or drum-brakes, (originally they came with a front spoon-brake) and just one gear. Nowadays they come also painted in other bright colours (pink, light blue, light green), with drum-brakes, and may have three gear ratios, integrated in a hub gear.

| A flat bar road bike is a relatively new style of bicycle. They are a split between a hybrid and a road bike.
These bikes feature ultra-light frames, thinner road style wheels and gears, however also comfort seats and flat handle bars.

| Fixed-gear bicycles (fixed-wheel)
A fixed-gear bicycle (or fixed wheel bicycle) is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning it cannot coast — the pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving. The sprocket is screwed directly onto the hub. When the rear wheel turns, the pedals turn in the same direction. This allows a cyclist to stop without using a brake, by resisting the rotation of the cranks, and also to ride in reverse.
Track cycling in a velodrome has always used fixed-gear track bikes, but fixed-gear bicycles are now again used on the road, a trend generally seen as being led by bicycle messengers.

Cruiser bicycles, also known as beach cruisers, combine balloon-tires, upright seating posture, single-speed mechanicals, and straightforward steel construction with expressive styling. The bikes, noted for their durability and heavy weight, were the most popular bicycle in the United States from the early 1930s through the 1950s — and enjoyed renewed popularity since the late 1990s.
